Folk dances and songs
There are 26 ethnic groups in the Diqing autonomous prefecture. Songs and dances of various ethnic groups in Diqing are extremely wonderful. Whenever the night comes and bonfire is lit up, people get together to enjoy the singing and dancing to the accompaniment of the stringed instruments.
Folk Craft Arts
The Diqing people have great interest in craft arts that you can see a variety of murals in the Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and Tibetan houses. Most of these murals’ content is about Buddhism filled with strong religious features include Buddha and Bodhisattva figures, temple figures, Buddhist stories, folklore and fairy tales and so on. There are also a variety of sculptures, thangka painting, butter sculpture, the Dongba paintings, carpets, earthenware and so on. The fantastic folk craft arts fully express the ethnic groups’s passion for life and their pursuit of the ideal things in Diqing.
Folk activities
February 8 Festival
Time: Lunar February 8.
Introduction: Lunar February 8 is the liveliest festival of the Naxi ethnic group, especially in the Baidi Township. During the festival, tens of thousands of participants come far and near areas from the Baidi Township, as well as some other ethnic groups. The activity site is in the scenic White-Water Terraces, people will kill a chicken to sacrifice to heaven and worship their gods first, then dance and sing which makes the scene boisterous.
Horse Racing Festival
Time: before or after the Dragon Boat Festival in Lunar May, generally last for three days.
Location: Wufengshan Racecourse.
Introduction: Shangri-La's Horse Racing Festival has a long history; it is the most solemn traditional folk festival among all the ethnic groups in Shangri-La County and also a grand assembly of the Tibetans in the spring. During the festival, in addition to the traditional equestrian competition, performances and other programs, there are also yak race, and so on which are rarely seen at other times.
Shangri-La Xianzi Festival
Time: Lunar May 7-May 9.
Introduction: Shangri-La Xianzi Festival is a fixed festival in Deqin County which is held every year. During the festival, each township would choose their representative Folk Art Display Team to Deqin County to play cultural and artistic performances and fashion shows. These activities demonstrate the folk customs and national culture.
