You do not visit Fenghuang Ancient Town until you go to Fenghuang market. In Fenghuang, going to the market is called “Ganchang”. In the market, you can find not only a wide range of agricultural products at cheap prices, but also rarely-seen goods characteristic of ethnic groups. The market is also the place where you can admire the beauty of girls of Miao nationality. At the first sight, people wear colorful national costumes, dynamic and energetic. In Fenghuang, there are markets almost every day. La’ershan, Heku, and Shanjiangzhe are markets mainly for Miao villages. And vendors from Jishou, Luxi, Guizhou’s Songtao, Tongren, and Chongqing’s Xiushan would also go to the market—“a combination of three provinces”. In these markets, many goods including handicrafts of ethnic groups are at low prices. You can never miss them.
The batik painting is very popular here. Batik paintings are a symbol of the Miao nationality’s handicraft. You can buy the local blue Miao skirt, giving you a special experience when walking around the ancient town. Ginger sugar is another local speciality. It is a special sugar made from sugar and ginger, allowing you to taste both the sweet from the sugar and the hot from the ginger. You can also buy some dried products (dried long bean, dried eggplants, dried bamboo shoots, dried red pepper) for your family or friends.
