Wuyuan, as the most beautiful village in China, is famous for its breath-taking scenery. But there are not many entertainment places in Wuyuan. Only in a few places can you find night clubs or dancing hall. But these are not suitable for this quiet place. Local entertainments which are with regional characteristics are common to see, such as Nuo Dance and local drama. Famous entertainment places include an exhibition hall of ancient folk traditions which show people the exquisite artwork of wood carving or embroidery, ect. Also some Tea Houses are popular. People in Wuyuan love drinking green tea. Tea performance can be seen in these Tea Houses.
In Wuyuan, the following activities are with local characteristics:
Dragon Parade is held on the 15th day of the first month of lunar year. The head and tail of the dragon are made of colorful paper. Every family is responsible for making lanterns to form the body of the dragon. At night, people light the candles in the lanterns and dance the dragon along the street. It is a tradition with a history of a thousand years. At that night, Wuyuan is very alive.
Nuo Dance in Wuyuan is a kind of very ancient dance which can be traced back to two thousand years ago. People created Nuo dance to show their best wishes of driving the ghost and diseases away. It is religious and carries totem conscious. Dancers wear masks to dance. The performance is simple, rough and exaggerated.
The local drama is a traditional activity in which people dress like drama characters to parade on streets. It is meant for showing respect to gods and also for recreation. The performers walk over perform to make people laugh. Skillful performers can even play martial arts, do the splits or turn somersaults.
