Foods in Pingyao, like other places in Shanxi Province, are mainly noodles. People in Shanxi love noodles very much. In the morning and night, local people usually eat porridge and steamed bun. Various noodles are usually for lunch. Noodles are served with abundant sauces. Tourists can try different flavors of noodles to feel the charm of Shanxi noodle culture.
On Ming-Qing Street, you can try different local snacks. Each restaurant has its own characteristic. Some charge reasonable price, some are famous for complete kinds of noodles, some are known for good wine and delicious desserts, some were visited by Chinese movie stars. Walking on Ming-Qing Street, tourists must have a try of them.
Pingyao beef has been famous since Ming Dynasty which was more than 500 years ago. High quality jarret is boiled and then salted. The beef is fat but not greasy, thin rather than firewood. People love its tenderness and endless aftertaste.Pingyao beef is different from other sauced beef in that the older the cattle are, the better Pingyao beef is.
Wantuo is another famous traditional snack in Pingyao. It is recommended that you eat it when drinking white wine. It was created by a famous Chef Dong a hundred years ago, in Qing Dynasty.
Wantuo is made of white flour. It is refreshing and fragrant and very popular among local people and tourists. Now the skills of making wantuo have improved much during so many years. The fourth generation of Chef Dong is still selling it.
There are many other snacks in Pingyao such as pan fried buns. The bottom of buns is gold and crispy. The stuffing is fragrant and savory.
Tofu product in Pingyao is also very unique. The scent smell and hot gas always attract a lot of tourists. It’s worth trying to eat it with deep-fried dough sticks.
