They are a kind of percussion music which is popular in Taiyuan and central Shanxi Province. Performances of these percussion instruments often scattered throughout the countryside, or in some factories. Shanxi Drums and Gongs has a long history, it is said that the locals began to use the drums and gongs to express the feelings of jubilation as early as Yao and Shun period.

The form of Drums and Gongs’ performance is very simple while the performing ways are of great variety. Drum player can even turn and jump to perform with drums hanged on his head, feet, ears, and shoulders, showing a high level of skills. The most spectacular and intense scene in Shanxi percussion performance would be Guche Drums and Gongs, which is performed by drum players driving Guche (drum cart) with horses ranging from four to tens of.
