Zhangjiajie is a rising tourist city famous for its unique natural scenery and abundant tourism resources. It is located in the northwest of Hunan province. Out of its total population of 1.62 million, almost 72% belong to ethnic minority groups, including Tujia, Bai and Miao nationalities. Zhangjiajie is a prefecture-level city consisting of Yongding and Wulingyuan Districts, Cili and Sangzhi Counties. Wulingyuan District, also called Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, is endowed with striking natural beauty. This site is dominated by more than 3,000 narrow sandstone pillars and peaks, many over 200m high. Between the peaks lie ravines and gorges with streams, pools and waterfalls, 40 caves, and two large natural bridges. It is also home to a number of endangered plant and animal species. Therefore, it was listed into the World Natural Heritage Catalogue by the UNESCO in 1992. What’s more, Zhangjiajie was awarded the title of “World Geological Park” in 2004.

Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (Floating Mountains)
BEIJING (Reuters) - A craggy peak in a scenic part of southern China has been renamed after floating mountains featured in Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar," with the province hoping to cash in on the movie's massive success. The "Southern Sky Column" in Zhangjiajie in southern Hunan province formally had its named changed to "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" in a ceremony on Monday, according to the Zhangjiajie government's official website ( www.zjj.gov.cn ). The government said the floating "Hallelujah Mountains" in the movie were inspired by the "Southern Sky Column," as a Hollywood photographer spent time shooting there in 2008. "Many pictures he took then become prototypes for various elements in the 'Avatar' movie, including the 'Hallelujah Mountains'," the website said.
Mengdonghe Rafting
Mengdonghe River is situated 80km southeast of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province, nestled among mountains, a remote canyon towering limestone cliffs, a beautiful river that's ranked among the top ones in china. Located in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Region, it is one of the sources of the culture of Tujia, and covers two counties of Yongshun and Guzhang. The river flows 200 kilometers in Yongshun County. An area of 4,000 hectares along the river has been opened for tourists. Drop off to visit famous Guzhang Tea factory.
Immortals’ Bridge
Next to the actual Tianzi Peak is the Immortals’ Bridge, a narrow rock ledge bridging a cavernous gorge. Trying to cross the bridge is ill-advised but, it’s a stunning scene combining Zhangjiajie’s grotesque rock formation, spiny pinnacles, valley floors and swirling streams. From here continue on to Tianzi Village where lodging can be had for the night. Hike out of the village the following morning and return to Zhangjiajie by foot or catch a bus back to civilization.
