Nine Dragon Screen

The Nine Dragon Wall, a provincial units of cultural relics protection of ShanXi province, is located on the south side of DaDong street in DaTong, which was created in 1396 and used as entrance screen in the mansion of ZhuGui, the thirteenth Duke of Dai who was nominated by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of Ming Dynasty. The Nine Dragon Wall is 45.5 meters long, 8 meters high and 2.09 meters thick, which is about twice bigger than the Nine Dragon Wall in Beihai Park in Beijing, sitting northward with coloured glazes on one side. The wall is built with yellow, green, blue, purple, black and white glazes, can be divided into pedestal, boby and top. These three patrs combine exquisitely and show the magnificence and dignity appropriately. On the surface of the Sumeru pedestal are carved two tiers of beasts:kylins, lions, tigers, deer and flying horses on the bottom, and small walking dragons on the top. All the beasts have various styles and shapes, and are as vivid as life. The coloured glaze boby of the wall is held upon th pedestal. The intersection of cyan sea waves and blue and yellow fog was painted on the underpart of the wall, dispalying a place of wandering. The nine dargons is hiding in the cloud, which looks like they are flying on the surface of the wall. A golden dragon is sitting in the middle, standing for nobleness and facing the central axis of the mansion with its imposing appearance. The first pair of dragons which are at the right and left sides of the middle one are pale yellow flying dragons which are heading eastward and pointing at the middle dragon with their tails. This couple of dragons look so natural, happy and pleased with themselves. The second pair of dragons are medium yellow, aiming at west with both their heads and tails. Their gesture looks familiar with the first pair’s and forms a symmetric figure with them. The third pair are purple dragons dancing in the air and they look quite different with their frightening faces. The last two dragons, each on one end, have olivine colours, rising gesture and straight and impressive looks. When the sun rises and casts shiny lights, the Nine Dragon Wall is also dyed into golden. It seems that the dragons are bursting out of the clouds and flying and dancing in the air. While the morning mist is dissipating, the giant dragons are twinkling golden lights, shaking their bodies, raising their heads, waving their tails, swimming in the sea of clouds and writhing on the waves of ocean, just like real dragons stirring our hearts.
