Yingxian Wooden Pagoda

The Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, commonly known as Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, is located in the north-west of Yingxian, which lies to the north of Shanxi province. The main building is the Fogong Temple which was established in 1056 during the Liao Dynasty. The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is the most ancient wooden pagoda still existing in China today. Together with Leaning Tower of Pisa and Eiffel Tower, it is also among the three wondrous towers of the world. The wooden pagoda lies between the main gate and the temple palace, from the north to the south providing a perfect alignment for the entire temple’s appearance. Octagonal in shape, its interior staircase reveals nine floors, although the pagoda’s exterior leads the viewer to expect only five floors. There are windows on all eight sides of the pagoda, which offer excellent views of the surrounding countryside. The appropriate proportion and the exquisite techniques used to construct the pagoda provide it with a magnificent and serene environment. The ancient Yingxian Wooden Pagoda is a masterpiece of Chinese timber construction; it was built without the help of a single nail, screw, or bolt. Its unique construction employs fifty-four different kinds of dougong, or bracket arms and is one of the most complex examples of roof construction in China, and the world. Moreover it is certainly the most complex example of roof construction of any building constructed during the Liao Dynasty. It occupies a special position in both architectural and art circles; it is revered as one of the ancient pagodas in China today. As the only highest and oldest Buddha pagoda made of only wood, Yingxian Wooden Pagoda represents China’s long history and religious beliefs.
